Where on the hand: On the course of any major line, on any mount, on influence lines running across the Mount of Venus, and on the thumb — at its base and on its first phalanx.
What it looks like: The line itself splits into two strands that bow apart and then rejoin, enclosing an elongated oval or lens shape within the line's own course. Benham is precise: “a split that returns to the original line of the lower end of the part which has broken away.” Length 2–15 mm; the shape sits ON the line, not beside it. Not to be confused with a square (four straight sides) or with an oval made by a chance line crossing.
The most consistently negative mark in the entire literature. Benham: “the island is always a defect, always a disturber, a warning to look out for something.” It divides the Current into two weaker streams that rejoin below the obstruction — weakness, division, drain, and a period rather than an event. Findyourfate calls it “always a negative sign,” possibly hereditary or stress-related, with “duration matches island length.” A chain is a run of islands.
On each line
- **Life line (jīvan rekhā)** — health dip, reduced vitality; chronic or hereditary illness. At the very start: inherited illness, or “mystery of birth” (Saint-Germain). Mid-line: serious illness or trouble, often digestive; with a wavy liver line, biliousness and chronic indigestion. Chinese: islands in the middle = serious illness risk; large islands in the old-age section = life-threatening. Indian Palm Reading: “illness, hereditary and chronic disease.” Modern Indian reading: if small, “family or business-related stress rather than accident or illness.”
- **Head line (mastishk rekhā)** — mental fatigue, confusion, poor concentration and memory; chronic neuralgia. At the start: “inherited trouble of the brain or the respiratory organs.” Under Saturn: “sure sign of serious deafness, often begins by a dot, then gradually enlarged.” Under Jupiter: delicate early mentality, poor nutrition. Under Apollo: weak eyesight. Under Mercury / the little finger: risk of nervous breakdown, cerebral disease in old age. A large island at the termination: severe intestinal trouble. Islanded throughout: brain trouble from overwork or dissipation. Two islands: memory decline, stubbornness.
- **Heart line (hriday rekhā)** — emotional strain, relationship difficulty. Benham: “weak physical action of the heart,” larger islands meaning a more serious cardiac implication. Under Apollo: health (eyesight) rather than emotion. Chinese: “problems with marriage or eyes”; unsuitable attractions.
- **Fate line (bhāgya rekhā)** — career stagnation, money loss. Saint-Germain reads it morally: “a guilty intrigue lasting as long as the island occupies the line” — but records that British palmists read it as financial or positional loss where the hand contradicts the moral reading. At the head-line junction: losses from bad decisions. At the heart-line junction: career damage from emotional interference. At the end: unrealised aspirations. An island forming a figure-8: “gift of second sight, or at least somnambulism.”
- **Sun / Apollo line** — loss of reputation and money; eye disease. At the starting point: “success helped by a guilty love; brilliant future for the illegitimate child of people in high position” (a positive island). At the heart-line intersection: loss of status through lustful behaviour.
- **Health / Liver line** — liver, gall, kidney or respiratory disease; insomnia, excessive dreaming. Large islands in women associated with mammary gland hyperplasia (Chinese). Indian: “serious injury, major health problems.”
- **Marriage line (vivāh rekhā)** — psychological incompatibility, family conflict; ill health of the spouse, constant quarrels. Beginning: pre-marital difficulty. Middle: romantic complications. End: impending separation. Multiple islands: unfavourable relationships.
- **Influence lines on Venus** — “islanded lines: guilty love affair.” An island crosswise on Venus: missed marriage opportunity.
On each mount
- **Jupiter** — lack of willpower; defamation; “cantankerous, egotistic and unsuccessful.” Saint-Germain: an ambitious career damaged by the reckless conduct of a relative or close friend.
- **Saturn** — bad luck, misfortune.
- **Sun / Apollo** — loss in business or career; a break in education; depression, illness.
- **Mercury** — business instability; failure to achieve in science.
- **Mars** — cowardice; bodily and mental weakness; suicidal tendency.
- **Moon / Luna** — lack or diminution of imagination.
- **Venus** — sexual addiction, unsuccessful love; prolonged health issues.
- **Rahu (centre)** — “a period of muddle or loss of direction.”
- **Upper middle palm** — bad fortune. **Lower middle palm** — consistently adverse.
Where the island is positive
- **Base of the thumb** — prosperity, good education, blessed with a son (Indian Palm Reading).
- **First phalanx of the thumb** — happiness and prosperity (Indian Palm Reading).
- **Figure-8 island on the fate line** — second sight, or at least somnambulism (Saint-Germain).
- **Island at the start of the Sun line** — a brilliant future, via irregular parentage (Saint-Germain).
- **A small island generally (modern Indian)** — family or business stress rather than accident or illness — the mildest available reading.
Timing, severity and repair
- **Length gives duration** — the trouble begins where the island opens and ends where the line closes and runs clean again.
- **Growing vs. shrinking** — an island that enlarges is worsening; one that narrows is recovering.
- **Worked ages (India.com)** — birth to 12: childhood illness; about 35: an illness of roughly three years; 60–65: the natural-death zone.
- **Sister line** — the main mitigation; a parallel line alongside underwrites the damaged section.
- **Square** — a square enclosing the island bounds the damage: “bounded difficulty with contained damage” (Life Palmistry).
- **Hard to repair** — islands are among the least repairable marks; the chain (a run of islands) is repairable only by sister lines.
How to spot it
- **Independence test (Benham)** — a true island is the line splitting and rejoining; an oval made by a chance line cutting across is not an island.
- **Versus a square** — a square has four straight sides and encloses the line; an island is a lens formed of the line's own two strands.
- **Versus a circle** — Palm Lines Co: “imperfect circles may be distorted islands.”
- **Versus a rhomboid** — a large angular island can present as a diamond if the split is sharply angled.
Western reading: Benham supplies the mechanism (the Current divided into two weaker streams) and the definitive form test. Saint-Germain supplies the sub-cases, including the moral fate-line reading and the rare positive islands, and is unusual in recording that British palmists disagreed with him about the fate-line island.
Read with care: India.com and Amar Ujala assert that an island on the life line in both palms “indicates shortened lifespan,” that fragmented life lines mean “premature mortality,” and that an island under Saturn on the head line is a “sure sign of serious deafness.” These are unfounded, health-adjacent, and precisely the claims that drive people to paid remedies. They should be reported as what the tradition says, never as a finding, and always with the counterweight that even within the tradition island severity is graded by size, colour and one-versus-two hands — and that the more careful Indian teachers read a small island as stress, not accident or illness.
