Where on the hand: Starts anywhere along the base of the palm — from the rascette, from the Mount of Luna on the ulnar side, from the Mount of Venus inside the Life line, from the Life line itself, or from the middle of the Plain of Mars — and runs vertically up the centre of the palm, crossing or stopping at the Head line and then the Heart line, ideally ending on the Mount of Saturn at the base of the middle finger.

What it looks like: A vertical line up the centre of the palm, varying enormously in length, depth and starting height; it may be deep and unbroken, wavy, chained, doubled, or present only as fragments above the Head line — and in many hands it is absent altogether.

Career, life-direction, worldly circumstance, the degree to which life is shaped by forces outside personal control, responsibility, and the "spine" of the life. Indian sources make it explicit: bhagya is destiny or fortune allotted by prarabdha karma — the events that come *to* you rather than the ones you make. It governs education chosen, career, choice of spouse, and success or failure in worldly terms.

Western reading: More cautious. Benham treats it as the Line of Saturn, indicating the balance and seriousness of the life, and is sceptical of literal career prediction. Cheiro is closer to the Indian view and reads it as the main-events line of the career.

Read with care: A star at the Saturn termination is traditionally read as sudden disaster, and islands as scandal — record these as tradition, not prediction. The popular Indian reading of a doubled Fate line as an extramarital affair is explicitly flagged in the research as folk rather than classical. Absence of the line is emphatically not a misfortune.
