Where on the hand: On any mount, straddling a break or defect in any line, on the Plain of Mars, on the Rahu mount at the palm's centre, and on the lower Venus mount inside the life line.
What it looks like: Four short independent strokes meeting to enclose a four-sided figure, 3–10 mm on a side. Life Palmistry: “Classical palmistry accepts rectangles and slightly trapezoidal shapes as long as all four sides are present.” Two configurations matter: a free-standing square on a mount, and a square straddling a break or defect in a line, where the line enters one side and exits the other — the strongest form.
The great exception to the negative catalogue. Cheiro: “The square is always a mark of preservation. Wherever it is found on a hand, it denotes a guarding or protecting power in relation to the line or mount it covers.” Findyourfate: “almost always a benefic symbol.” Benham's mechanism: the square boxes in the escaping Current and forces it back into its proper channel. Crucially, the square does not prevent the event — Life Palmistry is explicit that squares “promise survivability, not prevention.”
On each line
- **Life line** — preservation from grave illness or accident; quick recovery. Over a break: “preservation from death” (Cheiro), the single most-cited protective configuration. Chinese: enables “unexpected rescue”; bridging a break = recovery from severe illness. Exception: a square separate from the line on the lower Venus mount, inside the life line = imprisonment, monastic seclusion or extended hospitalisation; near the head-line junction = a history of surgery.
- **Head line** — protection against mental breakdown. Around a cross: “the intelligence of the subject saves him from the worst consequences.” Around a break: protection from a grave accident or misfortune.
- **Heart line** — emotional trials contained; recovery assured; a square bridging a broken heart line means the crisis is resolved. Chinese dissent: a square on the heart line is “an unfavourable sign indicating emotional depression and pains,” occasionally suicidal ideation — contradicting the Western protective reading.
- **Fate line** — “preservation from loss”; protection from heavy financial loss “or other very serious disaster”; career setback contained; also guards against dangers shown by lines running into the fingers, and against accidents in home life or travel.
- **Sun / Apollo line** — “preservation or rescue from attack against the subject's reputation; also against great money loss.”
- **Health line** — Chinese: “a sign of surgery due to a heart problem.”
On each mount
- **Jupiter** — the Teacher's Square: ability to impart knowledge, leadership, commitment to helping others; also “sober sense guiding one's ambition,” protection from social failure, enhanced authority, misfortune reversed. Contrarian: Palmistry-Astrology reads it as “enthusiastic and arrogant.”
- **Saturn** — protection from major misfortunes and accidents; “preservation from danger and/or luck in not going to jail”; protects property and finances. A star within a square on Saturn = escape from assassination. Red stains at the corners: escape from fire.
- **Sun / Apollo** — “business acumen protects artists from exploitation”; reduces potential for disaster or reputational loss; Palmistry-Astrology: “will have a lot of money.”
- **Mercury** — protection from financial loss; a stable mind; honesty; protects against the consequences of weak resolve. Negative variant: nervousness or deceitfulness.
- **Mars (upper and lower)** — “violent temper held in check by reason”; control of a grumpy nature; averts injury by blade or sword.
- **Moon / Luna** — protection against negative markings on the mount; against danger during travel, drowning and flood; shields against nerve strain.
- **Venus** — the great exception and the great disagreement. Saint-Germain: a confined, reclusive life. Findyourfate: on upper Venus near the life line, detention or incarceration. Destiny Palmistry: protection against broken relationships, traditionally “a confined life.” Palmistry-Astrology: excessive sensuality. yourchineseastrology: “symbolizes dying young.”
- **Rahu (centre)** — “protective; shields through dangerous or chaotic periods.”
- **Plain of Mars** — “unintimidated courage; ability to stand firm without self-destruction” (Life Palmistry).
- **Upper middle palm** — “wealthy, glorious and gifted” (Palmistry-Astrology).
Where the square is positive
- **Almost everywhere** — this is the one mark whose default valence is protective across both major traditions.
- **Over a break in the life line** — preservation from death; the most-cited protective configuration in all of palmistry.
- **Around a cross on the head line** — intelligence saves the subject from the worst consequences.
- **On Jupiter** — the Teacher's Square.
- **On Saturn** — escape from disaster, fire and imprisonment.
- **On the Rahu mount** — shields through chaotic periods.
- **On both hands** — inherited and active protection, the strongest form.
- **The exceptions** — a square on the lower Venus mount (confinement), a square on the heart line in the Chinese reading (depression), and Palmistry-Astrology's contrarian Jupiter reading (arrogance).
Combination readings (Life Palmistry)
- **Square + island** — bounded difficulty, damage contained.
- **Square + star** — intensity arrives in protected form (rare, positive).
- **Square touching a line** — actively engaged protection.
- **Square merely near a line** — partial, available protection.
- **Square on both hands** — inherited and active protection, the strongest form.
- **Square + tassel** — Benham allows that “occasionally a square can protect even a tassel formation.”
- **Square + dot** — “squares effectively repair dot damage” (Benham).
Limits of the protection
- **Survivability, not prevention** — squares do not guarantee that nothing bad happens.
- **No outcome prediction** — they do not predict outcomes.
- **No override** — they do not override weak lines elsewhere in the hand.
- **No licence** — they do not “license recklessness.”
Western reading: Cheiro's absolute formulation — the square is always a mark of preservation — is the anchor. Benham supplies the mechanism and the repair hierarchy in which the square ranks first. Saint-Germain supplies the mount table, including the Venus confinement reading and the star-within-a-square escape from assassination.
Read with care: “Square on Venus = dying young” (yourchineseastrology) is an extreme outlier that contradicts every other source on the same placement. Present the Venus square as contested, with the mainstream reading being restriction, confinement or a life lived within limits — not death. The Chinese reading of a square on the heart line as depression and suicidal ideation likewise contradicts the Western protective reading.
