Where on the hand: Leaving any major line at an angle and running toward the fingers; most often observed on the life and fate lines.
What it looks like: A thin offshoot leaving the main line at an angle, thinner and shorter than the parent line, going up toward the fingers. Benham calls these splits — “splinters which have broken the lines” that divert the Current.
The benefic branch: “sudden inspiration, fruition, and happiness” — success, goals achieved, obstacles overcome, hopefulness. Benham's caution is that the strength of the split matters: “stronger splits indicate greater significance,” and they represent attempted life changes.
On each line
- **Life line** — marriage, completing education, promotion, improved finances; each rising branch is dated at its point of departure.
- **Fate line** — an upward turn in the life's trajectory; the fate line's rising branches are among the minor lines PalmHermit notes are most variable over time.
- **Head line** — an intellectual advance or a goal achieved through the mind.
- **Heart line** — a rise in affection or a relationship reaching fruition; contrast the drooping branch toward lower Mars, which is emotional disappointment.
- **Sun line** — increased recognition; the Sun line's branches are likewise among the more variable minor lines.
- **Indian Vriksha (tree) chinha** — “small branches extending upward from major lines” — auspicious.
On each mount
- **Jupiter** — a branch rising toward Jupiter carries ambition and advancement; contrast the cross on a head-line branch to Jupiter, read as thwarted ambition.
- **Saturn** — a rising branch toward Saturn is read through Saturn's field: standing, property, seriousness of purpose.
- **Apollo / Sun** — a rising branch toward Apollo carries recognition and reputation.
- **Mercury** — a rising branch toward Mercury carries business or communication success.
- **Vertical lines on mounts** — the general principle behind all of them: vertical lines “heighten a mount's positive qualities,” and a single deep vertical is one of Benham's six strengthening signs.
Where it is positive
- **Everywhere it rises** — this is a benefic mark by definition; the rule is vertical benefic, horizontal malefic.
- **On the life line** — marriage, education completed, promotion, improved finances.
- **As a repair** — a rising branch is listed among the signs to scan for when assessing whether a defect converts into a survivable transition.
- **Vriksha (tree)** — the Indian auspicious form of the same shape.
