Also called: Support line · Parallel line · Line of Mars · Mangal rekha
Where on the hand: Running parallel and close beside a major line. The most important instance, the Line of Mars, originates on the lower Mount of Mars and runs inside the life line, very close beside it.
What it looks like: A second line running parallel and close beside a major line, shorter and usually finer, shadowing it along part or all of its course.
The principal repair and reinforcement mark. Findyourfate: sister lines “support and protect primary lines; strengthen constitution.” Benham on the Line of Mars: it indicates “a stronger constitution than is shown by even a deep Life line”; where a weak life line is accompanied by one, the subject is “inherently delicate, but there will be an underlying vital strength.” It is also the only effective repair for a chained line.
On each line
- **Life line (as the Line of Mars)** — a stronger constitution than even a deep life line shows; where a weak life line has one beside it, the subject is inherently delicate but underpinned by vital strength; and where defects appear on the life line, “a line of Mars runs past this point,” so those dangers will not “prove fatal, owing to the underlying vitality.”
- **Head line** — the same buffering function: the line's work continues even where the main line is damaged.
- **Heart line** — one of the three repair signs (with overlapping ends and squares) showing that a broken heart line's condition “won't become fatal.”
- **Fate line** — a career buffer; the trajectory continues across damage in the main line.
- **Any chained line** — the only effective repair for a chain (Benham).
- **Any island** — the main mitigation for an island, underwriting the weakened section.
On each mount
- **Lower Mars** — the origin of the Line of Mars, the archetypal sister line.
- **Venus** — the Line of Mars runs inside the life line across the Venus field; distinguish it from Venus influence lines and from lines concentric to the life line, which Saint-Germain reads as love affairs beyond the subject's control.
- **Any mount** — the general principle: a second parallel line reinforces rather than defeats; compare Benham's single deep vertical line, one of his six mount-strengthening signs.
Where it is positive
- **Everywhere it occurs** — this is the system's principal benefic repair mark.
- **Second in the repair hierarchy** — after the square and ahead of a bar across a gap or overlapping ends.
- **Against a chain** — uniquely effective, where nothing else works.
- **Against life-line defects** — the classical statement that defects will not prove fatal where a Mars line runs past them.
