Where on the hand: Along any stretch of any major line, and on the bracelet lines at the wrist; Dale's Chain of Fortune sits under the Jupiter mount.
What it looks like: A run of small islands linked end to end — the line becomes a series of little loops, like a bicycle chain or a string of beads. Length varies from a few millimetres to most of a line.
Continuous, prolonged obstruction, as against the island's single episode. Benham: chains “create continuous obstruction, weakening lines throughout affected sections,” and are “difficult to repair except through sister lines.” Duration correlates to chain length.
On each line
- **Head line** — Benham's worst placement: vacillation, chronic indecision; also extended mental stress and chronic anxiety.
- **Heart line** — emotional instability, many short relationships; combined with certain other marks, a greater likelihood of extramarital involvement.
- **Life line** — chronic health issues; a difficult, unprivileged upbringing.
- **Fate line** — career instability.
- **Health line** — poor overall health, associated with liver disease.
- **Bracelet / rascette** — Dale, Indian Palmistry: chains on the bracelet lines mean “good composure of body” — a rare positive chain.
On each mount
- **Jupiter** — Dale's Chain of Fortune: crosses or stars under Jupiter forming a chain mean “wit and even nature; riches and honours.”
- **Not otherwise a mount mark** — the chain is a defect of a line's own course; the literature gives no general mount-by-mount chain table.
