Where on the hand: Leaving any major line at an angle and running toward the wrist; also on the outside of the life line, where the reading changes.
What it looks like: A thin offshoot leaving the main line at an angle, thinner and shorter than the parent line, going down toward the wrist. Benham's splits — “splinters which have broken the lines” that divert the Current.
“Disappointment in life,” disillusionment; loss of control, pessimism, negativity, losses. A drooping branch weakens the parent line, drawing energy away from it. As with rising branches, the strength of the split governs its significance, and the branches represent attempted life changes.
On each line
- **Life line** — “loss of energy or upsetting circumstances,” dated at the point of departure.
- **Life line, outside** — the exception: drooping lines positioned on the outside of the life line may indicate travel.
- **Heart line, toward lower Mars** — emotional disappointment, relationship setback.
- **Head line** — a downward split draws mental energy away from the line's main course.
- **Fate line** — a downward branch weakens the trajectory rather than redirecting it upward.
- **Travel lines** — the outward-drooping life-line branch is the point where the drooping branch and the travel line converge.
On each mount
- **Lower Mars** — the destination of the heart line's drooping branch: emotional disappointment and relationship setback.
- **Luna / Moon** — branches drooping toward the Moon carry the mount's restlessness and travel associations, especially from the life line's outer edge.
- **Venus** — a drooping branch on the inner side of the life line runs into the Venus field, where influence lines and worry lines also originate.
- **General rule** — downward and transverse marks are malefic, upward and vertical benefic.
Where it is positive
- **Outside the life line** — drooping lines here may indicate travel rather than loss, the one recorded exception.
- **As an attempted change (Benham)** — splits represent attempted life changes, which reframes even a drooping branch as agency rather than fate.
- **Weak splits** — a faint drooping branch is correspondingly weak in significance, since stronger splits indicate greater significance.
