Also called: Inner Life Line · Sister Line of Life · Vita Soror · Linea Martis · Guardian Angel Line
Where on the hand: A line running INSIDE the Life line — between the Life line and the thumb, on the Mount of Venus side — parallel to it and close beside it. It rises from the Mount of Lower Mars (the small area inside the Life line's origin, in the thumb-web) and runs down alongside the Life line, either partway or its whole length. Indian sources add a second course: rising from the lower Mars area or the early part of the Life line and running toward the Venus mount rather than parallel to the Life line.
What it looks like: A fine to deep sister-line hugging the Life line's inner curve; may be short or full-length, and several Mars lines of differing thickness may appear on one palm.
The vitality-reserve line — a line of reinforcement. It shows great vitality, power of resistance to illness and disease, and constitutional strength greater than even a deep Life line shows. It carries courage, fighting spirit and a robust, combative disposition. Above all it is protective: it minimises and bridges breaks in the Life line.
What it signifies
- **Great vitality** — power of resistance to illness and disease.
- **Constitutional strength** — greater reserve than even a deep Life line indicates.
- **Courage and fighting spirit** — a robust, combative disposition.
- **Protection** — it minimises and bridges breaks in the Life line, carrying the subject over the gap.
- **Indian addition: wealth and influence** — sharp intellect, thoughtful decision-making, social standing as an "intellectual", reliability, good health with little anger; popular Indian media call a strong Mangal rekha a millionaire's mark.
Variations
- **Running the whole length of the Life line** — the strengthening effect operates throughout life.
- **Running only part of the way** — it operates only for that dated period; invaluable for reading a rally in health, or a period of unusual courage.
- **Deeper than the Life line** — the underlying strength dominates; read the Mars line as the primary vital indicator.
- **Thinner than the Life line** — a supporting line; it improves the constitution.
- **Bright red in colour** — Dale: "great war success"; martial courage.
- **Branches rising from it that cross the Head line** — increased mental force; Indian sources warn it can also mean the subject overtaxes the brain.
- **Branches from it merging into the Fate line** — fortune accelerates rapidly; career advancement through sheer vitality. A Raj Yoga combination.
- **Sweeping across the base of the hand to the Mount of Luna** — excess vitality expressed as restlessness, travel, craving for excitement and indulgence.
- **Reaching onto the Venus mount (Indian)** — negligence, irritability, impulsiveness; social standing confined to lower circles.
- **Cutting the Fate line (Indian)** — life becomes substantially more problematic.
- **Touching the Marriage line (Indian)** — unfulfilled married life.
- **Terminating at the Heart line (Indian)** — excessive emotional sensitivity.
- **On a coarse or sensual hand** — Benham: it intensifies excessive appetites and can damage reputation and marriage.
How to spot it
- **Distinguish from an influence line** — an influence line runs parallel but further from the Life line, deeper into the Venus mount, and represents a person (parent, spouse) rather than the subject's own vitality. The Mars line hugs the Life line.
Western reading: Benham and the classical writers treat it as the sister line of Life — a reserve of vitality and combativeness that repairs Life-line breaks. Benham warns that on a coarse or sensual hand it intensifies excessive appetites.
Read with care: Popular Indian sources marketing this as a "millionaire's mark" go far beyond anything in the classical texts. The line's protective reading of Life-line breaks is a tradition, not a health prognosis; never present it as a guarantee of longevity.
