Where on the hand: Formed by the Life line on the radial side, the Head line across the top, and the Health/Mercury or Fate line on the ulnar side. Its interior is the Plain of Mars — the hollow centre of the palm. · Formed by three lines: the head line as its upper side, the life line as its radial side, and the health/Mercury line or the sun line as its ulnar side. Its narrowest point — the upper angle — sits under Jupiter where the head and life lines meet; it opens outward and downward toward Luna. In practice it is the frame around the Plain of Mars.

What it looks like: A large three-sided region occupying the middle of the palm, judged on size and cleanness of formation. · A large triangle occupying most of the palm's centre, its outline only as clear as the three lines that form it. Read by size, by the cleanness of its sides, and by the sharpness of its three angles.

A large, clean, well-formed triangle indicates a broad, generous, healthy, well-balanced nature and good fortune. A small or badly formed triangle indicates a narrow, timid, constricted life. · The Great Triangle reads the scale of a life: a large, clean, well-outlined triangle gives generosity, breadth and good fortune; a small or narrow one gives a constricted, mean-spirited existence. Each of its three angles has its own specific reading.

Western reading: Cheiro treats the Great Triangle alongside the Quadrangle as the two great regions of the palm's interior.

Read with care: NOTE ON THE INDEPENDENCE RULE. This reference states elsewhere that a figure formed by chance intersections of major lines is not a true sign. The money triangle and the great triangle are, by definition, formed exactly that way. Both are long-standing named figures in the tradition, so they are retained — but they are a stated exception to the independence rule, not an application of it. The two entries also gave different constructions; the great triangle is Life + Head + Health/Mercury, the money triangle is Fate + Head + a third line.
