Where on the hand: The first finger, rising directly above the Mount of Jupiter at the radial (thumb) edge of the finger row.
What it looks like: Ideally reaching to about the middle of the middle finger's nail phalange, straight, and roughly equal in length to the ring finger.
Jupiter's finger carries ambition, leadership, ego, religion, law, authority, self-respect — the whole sense of "I am". Its length against the ring finger is the single most-read ratio on the hand. A strong, straight, well-set index gives command and self-belief; a weak or low-set one drains confidence out of the entire personality.
Length
- **Longer than the ring finger** — Jupiter dominance: ambition, ego, command, the desire to lead. Indian sources add selfishness, harshness, cunning, flattery of superiors and severity to inferiors, hunger for power, and spiritual domination of others.
- **Shorter than the ring finger** (common) — Apollo takes the lead; creativity and risk-appetite over command.
- **Equal to the ring finger** — rare; the balanced mind.
- **Equal to the middle finger** — very unusual. Indian tradition: fortune, fame and authority. Western readers call it the mark of the autocrat or tyrant.
- **Very short** — decisions made quickly.
Shape and tip
- **Pointed tip** — idealistic ambition. Indian sources: a long pointed index means blind adherence to tradition and religion, interest in *tantra* and *mantra*, and belief in spirits and ghosts (noted especially of women).
- **Square tip** — practical ambition; firmness of character and generosity.
- **Flat, average length** — an unstable mind.
Lean and set
- **Curving toward the middle finger** — the commonest lean: uncertainty about life direction, need for security or financial dependence, insecurity, jealousy, emotional secrecy; ambition made anxious by duty.
- **Crooked or twisted** — Cheiro: the ambitions themselves are crooked; unscrupulous, will use others.
- **Leaning backward/outward** — lack of self-interest, self-effacement.
- **Low-set** — deficient self-confidence; low-set Jupiter together with low-set Mercury is the hardest configuration of all.
When Jupiter dominates
- **The type** — the leader, the priest, the lawyer, the politician; ego, ambition, religion, authority.
- **In excess** — arrogance, tyranny, egotism.
- **Cheiro** — a long index enables one to command others effectively.
