Where on the hand: Set on the radial edge of the hand, opposite the four fingers, with its third section forming the ball of Venus at the root of the palm.

What it looks like: Three sections: the nail phalange, the middle phalange, and the fleshy ball at the base. Read it in both front view and side profile — the two views give different information.

The thumb outranks every other feature on the hand. It is simultaneously the seat of will (Mars), reason (Mercury) and vitality (Venus). A great thumb redeems a poor hand; a poor thumb undermines a great hand.

Western reading: Cheiro and D'Arpentigny both rank the thumb above every other hand feature for character.
