The catalogue contains three non-interchangeable kinds of mark, and confusion between them is endemic. Practitioners take the fingertip register as fate or constitution, the mount register as capacity or talent, and the line register as unfolding events.

The three registers

**Dermatoglyphic (fingertips, palmar skin)** — ridge patterns: loops, whorls, arches. Examples: the shankh/chakra count, the *bhanwara* whorl. **Fixed at birth, never change** — a genuinely constitutional reading.
**Mount-marks** — small independent figures on the fleshy pads. Examples: star, triangle, square, temple, lotus, trident, conch, all the animal marks. Can appear, deepen and fade over years.
**Line-marks** — configurations *of* the main lines. Examples: fish, island/yav, tree, chain, ladder, M-sign, money triangle, manibandha. Change with time; 'sudden appearance' is a recognised event.
