Also called: Short-fingered and long-fingered hands · Size of the hand
Where on the hand: Measured on the whole hand: the length of the fingers against the length of the palm, and the size of the hand against the size of the body.
What it looks like: Compare the middle finger to the palm length; then judge the hand's overall bulk against the fingers', and the hand's size against the person's build.
This ratio is the single measurement that generates the elemental classification, but it is also read on its own: short fingers grasp the whole and act, long fingers analyse the parts and deliberate.
Finger length against palm
- **Palm markedly longer than the fingers (short-fingered hand)** — speed, intuition, impatience, grasp of the whole rather than the parts, dislike of detail, executive rather than analytic intelligence, impulsiveness, action before thought. Fire and Earth hands.
- **Fingers as long as or longer than the palm (long-fingered hand)** — love of detail, analysis, patience, deliberation, method, ceremony, thoroughness, criticism, over-thinking, slowness to act. Air and Water hands.
Bulk of palm against fingers
- **Palm much larger and heavier than the fingers overall** — the material and physical nature dominates the mental.
- **Fingers long and fine with a small palm** — the mental and nervous nature dominates the physical: capacity outruns stamina.
Hand size against the body
- **A hand large in relation to the body** — attention to detail and to small work; the classical paradox that large hands do fine work.
- **A small hand** — thinks in wholes, plans on a large scale, dislikes detail.
