Where on the hand: Applies anywhere on the palm where a geometric mark is claimed — mounts, lines, fingers and the quadrangle alike.

What it looks like: A genuine mark is drawn by its own small, short, independent strokes, complete in itself. A false one is merely the accidental crossing or overlap of two or more major lines that happens to enclose a shape.

This is the first and most often violated test in the whole system. A cross, star, square, triangle or island only counts if it is formed by its own small independent lines, not by the coincidental clashing of the main lines. Most stars, crosses and triangles people find on their own palms are artifacts of line intersections and are read as nothing at all by careful practitioners. Applying this rule alone eliminates the large majority of alarming self-diagnoses.

**Step one of any reading** — ask whether the mark is made of its own lines. If not, stop; it is nothing.
**Where it bites hardest** — crosses, because crossing lines are exactly what produces a cross shape by accident.
**Grilles too** — Benham notes people who report a grille usually have crossbars or ordinary fine skin lines instead.
**Circles** — Palm Lines Co warns that circles are genuinely rare and “imperfect circles may be distorted islands.”
**Stars of David** — the source itself cautions that “most stars of David are distorted triangles.”
