Where on the hand: The band of palm lying between the Head line and the Heart line, running from the radial edge across to the percussion. · The four-sided space between the head line (below) and the heart line (above), running the width of the palm from the radial edge under Jupiter to the percussion under Mercury. Its roof is the heart line, its floor the head line, and it lies directly under the mounts of Saturn and the Sun.

What it looks like: A four-sided strip across the middle-upper palm, bounded above by the Heart line and below by the Head line; its width and evenness are what is read. · A long band across the middle of the palm. Read by its width, by whether it is evenly formed or pinched at one end, and by how many lines cross it.

The quadrangle is the field in which several important markings are read — most notably the Mystic Cross, which must float freely within it. Its own reading is taken from the width and evenness of the band between the two lines. · The Quadrangle measures the mind's disposition toward other people — the breadth or narrowness of judgement. An even, smooth, uncrossed quadrangle is the ideal: balanced judgement and an even temper. Narrowing at either end restricts the outlook in a specific way.

Western reading: Cheiro devotes a chapter to the Great Triangle and the Quadrangle together; the mystic cross is the mark that made the region famous.
