Where on the hand: Palm surface; classically part of the 'pitcher, goad, flag and lotus-stalk' cluster.

What it looks like: A long, slightly wavy vertical line terminating at its upper end in a small closed bud-shape — a narrow pointed oval — sometimes with a short leaf-stroke halfway up the stem.

Bṛhat Saṃhitā makes it a guardian-of-treasure mark; the Garuḍa Purāṇa gives it as indicating the possession of gems. The '32 signs' list distinguishes sharply: lotus stem AND lotus together signifies a powerful emperor — the stalk alone is treasure, the stalk-plus-flower is empire.
