Where on the hand: Palm surface; also among the sole-marks in the classical royal formulae.

What it looks like: A large rounded body-mass formed of two or three concentric curves, with one long curve descending from its front (the trunk) and a broad flat curve on the side (the ear); four short verticals below as legs. Like all the animal marks it appears as a suggestive mass of curved lines, never as a picture.

'The sign of the elephant makes a person king.' Also fortune, intelligence, government employment, royal prosperity; wisdom, strength, loyalty, reliability. Bṛhat Saṃhitā places the elephant with lotus, conch, umbrella, palanquin and horse among the six kingship-marks.
