Where on the hand: A short horizontal line lying across the Mount of Luna, low in the palm, running in from the percussion toward the centre of the hand.

What it looks like: A short straight bar across the lower percussion side; it commonly reddens visibly when an allergy or infection is active.

The modern reading of this marking has moved decisively away from morality toward chemical sensitivity. It denotes sensitivity towards food, drugs or both — and by extension to airborne pollutants, smoke, alcohol and pharmaceuticals. It is found most often on long, slim, heavily-lined "nervous type" hands.

Western reading: A wholly modern reframing of the old Via Lascivia territory: the moral reading is replaced by a sensitivity-to-substances reading.

Read with care: Two claims here are not merely unsupported but refuted. The islanded form read as “evidence of diabetes” has no clinical basis whatsoever. And the children's reading rests on the sugar–hyperactivity idea, which controlled trials have disproved (Wolraich et al., JAMA 1995). Do not restrict a child's diet, or accept a behavioural label for a child, on anything in this entry. Nothing on the palm diagnoses allergy, diabetes or drug sensitivity.
