Where on the hand: Beneath the little finger as a curved horizontal line, ending between the ring and the little finger. It runs across the front or face of the Mercury mount, not along its side — this is the key distinction.

What it looks like: A noticeably long curved or straight horizontal line crossing the face of the Mercury pad; distinctly longer than a Marriage line.

As the "spinster line", it is traditionally read as relationship difficulty, repeated breakups, or a life without partnership. As the Ring of Mercury, it is an opposing force to Mercury's gifts: it weakens communication and creates obstacles in intimate relationships "through ill feelings or attitudes". Some sources read it as concern about infidelity.

Read with care: The name "spinster line" and its reading of a life without partnership is a period judgement about unmarried women and should never be delivered as a prediction. The sources themselves demand a full cross-check of other markings before saying anything about relationships, and a minority read the same line positively.
