Where on the hand: The twelve phalanges of the four fingers (three to each finger), each assigned one sign of the zodiac. In the commonly published arrangement: the index finger (Jupiter) carries Meṣa, Vṛṣabha and Mithuna; the middle finger (Saturn) carries Makara, Kumbha and Mīna; the ring finger (Sun) carries Karka, Siṃha and Kanyā; the little finger (Mercury) carries Tulā, Vṛścika and Dhanu.

What it looks like: No marking of its own — a grid laid over the twelve finger sections, so that any line, cross, grille or mole on a phalange can be named by the sign it falls in as well as by the planet ruling the finger.

This mapping lets an Indian reader translate hand marks into astrological language without a birth chart: a mark on a phalange is read as a disturbance to that rāśi, and to whatever the rāśi governs in the person's life. The finger's planetary ruler and the sign on the phalange are read together — a mark on the base of the index finger, for instance, is read through Jupiter and through Mithuna at once.

Read with care: Published arrangements of the signs on the fingers vary between sources, and the mapping is not found in the classical Samudrika texts; it belongs to modern Hindi popular astrology. Give it as one common arrangement, not the arrangement.
