What it looks like: A narrow-waisted vessel: two curves flaring outward at top and bottom from a constricted middle, standing on a small base; sometimes with a short vertical pestle-stroke rising from the cup.
A ritual-competence mark. The Garuḍa Purāṇa is precise — the mortar appears on those who perform sacrifices — and Bṛhat Saṃhitā 68 agrees: a mortar shape marks a performer of sacrificial ceremonies.
