Palmistry is classified as a pseudoscience: it is widely viewed as such “due to various contradictions between different interpretations and the lack of evidence for palmistry's predictions,” with apparent accuracy attributed to cold reading. Ray Hyman's classic demonstration involved giving readings deliberately opposite to standard interpretations and finding clients responded just as positively. Palmistry is distinct from dermatoglyphics, a genuine scientific field. Everything in this catalogue is a descriptive compilation of what the traditions claim, not an endorsement.

The internal contradictions that undermine authority

- **Angle on the Moon** — Palmistry-Astrology: obtuse angle = protection from hazards of sea travel. Saint-Germain: “great drowning danger.”
- **Island on the fate line** — Saint-Germain: a moral reading, “a guilty intrigue.” British palmists: financial loss or loss of position — and Saint-Germain himself records the disagreement.
- **Triangle generally** — nearly all sources: lucky. Chinese: triangle on the health line = mental instability; on Neptune = “the punishment of being lonely all the life.”
- **Circle generally** — Findyourfate: “evil unless on a mount.” Saint-Germain: favourable on Jupiter, Saturn and Apollo; lethal on Mercury, Mars, Moon.
- **Star as a class** — Cheiro: “a fortunate mark with one exception.” Indian Palm Reading's mount table: almost uniformly injury and death.
- **Whether lines change** — fatalist popular media: a fixed map. Benham, PalmHermit, Palm Lines Co, the Indian island article: lines and marks change.
- **Which hand to read** — Benham: left = design, right = what you made of it. Many Indian sources: right for men, left for women. Modern readers: non-dominant = potential, dominant = actual.
- **Trident on Jupiter** — Palm Lines Co: leadership success. Palmistry-Astrology: “wealthy, estated but have health issues.”
- **Mole on the palm** — Amar Ujala: upper-right = wealth, upper-left = money quickly spent. Times Now Hindi: same rule, but other placements diverge by gender and by hand.
Responsible framing template
- **The recommended wording** — “Traditional Hast Samudrik and Victorian European palmistry both assign a grave meaning to this configuration — [claim]. Both traditions also hold that [mitigating rule: one hand only / repair sign present / marks change]. The traditions contradict each other on this exact placement, and none of it has evidential support. It is best read as folklore about what the culture feared, not as information about a person's future or health.”
- **Why it matters practically** — health-adjacent claims (deafness, blindness, “mammary gland hyperplasia,” infertility, mortality) can delay real medical care, and mortality claims are exactly the lever used to sell gemstones and remedial ritual.
Read with care: The traditional literature is freely fatalistic and often frightening — “death on the scaffold,” “sure sign of serious deafness,” “indicates shortened lifespan.” Such claims are catalogued in these entries because a complete reference must contain them, and each is flagged in its own entry. None should ever be relayed as a finding about a real person.
