Where on the hand: The four gaps between the digits — thumb to index, index to middle, middle to ring, ring to little — seen with the hand held up and allowed to open of its own accord. Never splay the hand deliberately.

What it looks like: Small arcs at each gap. What matters is the natural resting width of each individual gap, not the total spread.

Each gap reports on a different kind of independence. Wide gaps generally read as openness, independence and unconventionality; tight gaps as convention, caution and reserve. The gaps are read one at a time, not as a single measurement.

Western reading: Western practice reads wide gaps positively, as openness and independence.

Read with care: This is a genuine doctrinal split: one Indian source reads gaps as poverty, while Western and other Indian sources read them as openness. Report both rather than choosing.
